Quick answer
Etsy recommends listing photos that are at least 2,000 pixels wide and high, and your first photo should be at least 635 px wide and high to avoid appearing lower in search, according to Etsy Help at the time of writing. Because Etsy crops photos differently across the site, keep the product centred with space around it so it works as both a square and a 4:3 thumbnail. rmvbg's Etsy preset exports 2400 × 1800 px (4:3) with the product centred.

Background: white or lifestyle?
Etsy doesn't require white. Many shops use a clean, consistent background for the first photo so search results look tidy, then lifestyle shots after it. A soft neutral or brand colour works well — set it with Change background colour.
