Quick answer
For most product images, export a square around 2000 × 2000 px: big enough for zoom on Amazon (1,000 px+) and Etsy's 2,000 px recommendation, and close to Shopify's 2048 × 2048 sweet spot. Use JPG for photos on white, PNG only when you need transparency, and WebP on your own site for faster pages. Keep JPG quality around 80–90% — higher mostly adds file size without visible detail.
Size by marketplace (at the time of writing)
| Marketplace | Recommended | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | 1,000+ px longest side for zoom | 500–10,000 px; JPEG preferred |
| Shopify | 2048 × 2048 px square | Up to 5000 × 5000 px, under 20 MB |
| Etsy | 2,000+ px width and height | First photo at least 635 × 635 px |
| eBay | 1,600 px for zoom | At least 500 px |
Which format
- JPG: photos on white or colour backgrounds — smallest files, accepted everywhere.
- PNG: cut-outs with a transparent background for designs and ads; larger files.
- WebP: your own website — similar quality to JPG at smaller sizes.
Quality and file size
Start from the full-resolution original and resize down, never up. A JPG quality of 80–90% is usually indistinguishable from 100% and much smaller. Keep the product sharp — blur can't be fixed by exporting bigger.
